Second Grade-כיתה ב
Second graders are off to a wonderful start! Most of our first weeks together have been devoted to lessons and activities designed to prepare us for the fall holidays. We blew the shofar, ate caramel apples, spent time in our school sukkah, waved the lulav and etrog, sang songs, played games, read stories, and more! Now that the holidays are over, we are looking forward to settling into the routine of a five-day week.
We begin each day together with tefillah (prayer). We have been studying the prayer “Mah Tovu”, which is recited upon entering the synagogue. In this prayer we express the hope that God will answer our prayers.
We have begun the formal study of Humash! We completed an introductory unit designed to help us understand the division of the Torah text into books, weekly portions, chapters and verses. Now we are studying the creation of the world in Hebrew. Songs and art projects help us to remember and visualize what we are learning.
We have also begun a special unit on Shabbat. This unit will reinforce and expand our knowledge of the rituals, traditions, songs and prayers of the most important day of the week.
Our study of Hebrew language has been focused on holiday vocabulary during these first weeks. We will now begin a unit based on the daily activities of the classroom. Stories, songs and games will help us master new words and phrases as we speak to each other and compose our own sentences in Hebrew.
We are looking forward to an exciting year of learning and growing together!
